Before 2011, San Antonio was working together with Saheli in Austin. The need in San Antonio was getting greater, and Saheli had been advising for a while to create a culture specific South Asian anti-DV organization. The founders of AWAAZ , had been preparing for it for years by conferring with the directors and staff of Family Violence Prevention Services, San Antonio Battered Women Shelter, and the South Asain community. After many more hours of brainstorming, research, strategizing and groundwork, AWAAZ was started in 2011 in San Antonio. The founders of AWAAZ SA were Tapasi Misra, Sakina Hassonjee Sharp and Hema Bhakta. They have grown AWAAZ to what it is today , with 7 board members, and many dedicated volunteers.
AWAAZ a group of dedicated members and volunteers, who work together with one goal in mind – build a safe and healthy Community , giving confidential help where needed, educate our community and be aware of this issue.
