Culture Matters: Centering Culture in Gender-based Violence Interventions
March 27 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Harmful cultural norms and other barriers (i.e., language, communication) can prevent survivors of family violence from seeking help when in need. Thus, it is important to support survivors of family violence in a culturally specific manner. Culturally specific support organizations can empower survivors to break free from the cycle of family violence by addressing their concerns in a way that affirms their cultural beliefs and effectively addresses language/communication issues. To learn more about the impacts of culture on South Asian survivors of violence, Awaaz and Dr. Shamita Das Dasgupta will be facilitating a webinar titled, “Centering Culture in Gender-based Violence Interventions”.
Shamita is a cofounder of Manavi, the first organization to focus on violence against South Asian women in the U.S. She has taught Psychology, Gender Studies, and Law at the Rutgers University and New York University, authored five books, written several academic papers and monographs, and is conducting training for Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence practitioners in the U.S. and India. In her retirement, she is enjoying writing mystery stories in Bengali..
