How can you help someone affected by violence?

Know what to do

  • Initiate dialogue
  • Believe the victim, and let them know it is not their fault
  • Listen without being judgmental
  • Compliment and build on their strenghts
  • Help them make a safety plan
  • Offer specific help by finding resources
  • Let them know that you are there for them

Know what to Avoid

  • Do not tell them what to do
  • Do not pressure the victim
  • Do not judge or blame the victim
  • Do not bad mouth or make excuses for the abuser
  • Do not demand proof of abuse
  • Do Not promise anything that you cannot support

Recognize the Warning signs of a Victim:

  • Visible unexplainable marks and bruises
  • Withdrawn/Absent from friends and regular activities
  • Extreme concern of partners anger, disapproval or happiness
  • Unable to make decisions without partner
  • Dramatic change in mood or personality/emotional outburst
  • Constantly defending the abuser
  • Limited or no access to resources(phone,car,money)
  • Repeatedly checking in with partner on whereabouts

Listen and Help

  • Listen,Listen,Listen without judging
  • Validate survivors feeling
  • Focus on the survivor and not on the perpetrator
  • Present them with options
  • Please be patient, and remember it has to be their decision.
